Next generation imaging science, OpenStack style

When the Queensland Brain Institute, one of the largest dedicated Neuroscience research organisations on the planet, decided that it was time for a monumental shift in the way scientists used and took advantage of computational resources for imaging workloads, there were some clear goals. Namely:

1. It needed to be flexible.

2. It needed to be adaptable.

3. It needed to provide scalable compute capacity

4. It needed to grow with the organisation.

The dedicated scientific imaging team combined with the ICT group realised that a sensible approach to these issues was to utilise the cloud computing environment that had been created "in the background" in the form of the NeCTAR federated openstack cloud. This environment initially wasn't the right 'shape' for an imaging environment workload, but the team adapted certain workflows to do this.

In this presentation, the audience will see and be introduced into an 'elastination' of the OMERO OpenMicrocopy Environment to run upon the OpenStack platform, as well as being given a preview of the use of cloud based image deconvolution. The talk will delve into the computational constructs of imaging science, the complexities of scalability in this space and how OpenStack has solved a large, (several petabytes of data in scale) storage and computational problem for the life sciences.

The talk promises to be both technical, deeply focused and quirky, but also approachable, lightly academic and appropriate for those on the periphery who want to learn how they can become involved in using such technologies as Ceph, Swift and in general the nova-compute principles to their strategic advantage in life sciences (or beyond).
