Building a Production Grade PaaS platform like Bluemix on OpenStack, leveraging Container based scalable services.

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Applications and services are the end goal for majority of operators and users of OpenStack. In this talk we are going to discuss building a production grade PaaS platform on top of OpenStack based on our experience deploying IBM's Cloud Foundry-based PaaS, Bluemix, on to IBM's OpenStack-based IBM Cloud Manager with OpenStack.

We will take you through our practical approach in terms of deploying, automating and maintaining a polyglot application platform IBM Bluemix on top of ICM by:

1. Leveraging key OpenStack Services like Neutron, Cinder, Keystone, Swift and open source tools such as Fog, Chef, BOSH, Ruby ERB

2. Outlining how application consume enterprise grade services running on Docker Containers deployed on OpenStack, which are brokered using a Service broker model.

3. Discussing the role of right networking for building a multi-tenant and scalable PaaS. We will detail configurations of Neutron setup using GRE tunnels, and how we reconfigured the topology to move from POC to production, and scaling in response to increasing traffic.

4. Detailing the role of Continuous integration and delivery in a polyglot platform like this, and we  tied everything from IaaS, to PaaS to a range of services is in an automated CI/CD pipeline.

5. Detailing how applications can leverage advanced features like autoscaling, load balancing, and monitoring by leveraging some of key OpenStack functionalities

6. Sharing some of the best practices for lifecycle management of this platform, both at the IaaS and PaaS level, and how day to day operational tasks can be automated.

Last but not the least, we will demonstrate Bluemix, and show how some of services like Swift and Container Service on OpenStack can be leveraged for application development.
